Benfield Road, Walkergate

The allotment site was first established in the 1920’s having been part of Walkergate Hospital which was set up to treat the wounded from the first World War.

The allotments were used for therapeutic purposes. It appears that in 1926, the date of the first meeting for which we have minutes, the site became self-managed although we do not have a date for actual transfer.

The site currently consists of 33 plots of which 10 are half’s. We have a large waiting list and are currently unable to add to it.

The site managed to win the “best small site” in 2004 and we have supported the Newcastle Allotment and Garden Show, with a stall, since its return in 2002.
