Allotments Working Group
Newcastle one of the few places in Britain where the general
management of its allotment sites is in the hands of the allotment gardeners
themselves.
In 1999 Newcastle City Council disbanded the Allotments
Sub-Committee and handed the day-to-day running of its 65 sites to a newly
elected Allotments Working Group with the professional support and advice
of the authority’s allotments officer. All eight members of the
working group are active plot-holders who serve in a voluntary unpaid
capacity.
Half the members must resign each year and their seats are
put up for election at a forum to which all allotment sites in the city
are invited to send representatives. A list of Area Reps. and their contact deatails is available via the link opposite.
The group allocates the annual allotments budget –
the greater part of which is always devoted to fence repairs, replacement
and maintenance – visiting many sites throughout the year to look
at problems ‘on the spot’ and discuss possible solutions.
They are always looking for ideas to promote allotment gardening, improve
site management and attract more people to take up the hobby.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
The Working Group meets once a month at the Civic Centre.
It advises the Council on:-
1. Policies and priorities for Newcastle allotment sites and it recently helped create the Newcastle Allotment Strategy 2010-2015.
2. How to spend the allotment budget (which comes from your rent)
It helps run:-
3. The annual City Allotment Show held in the Civic Centre each year
It produces:-
4. ‘Dig This’ a quarterly newsletter which can be accessed through the website, or you can register with the website and have your own copy of sent to your e-mail address on day of issue. Each site has printed copies sent to their secretary for those without e-mail.
It advises allotment sites upon:-
5. Management issues such as how to run a committee.
6. Getting grants for worthwhile projects such as composting toilets, community huts etc and has its own experienced funding advisor (Matty Hall) who will visit you.
WHAT DOES YOUR NAWG AREA REPRESENTATIVE DO?
For routine work on perimeter security, water supplies, pest control, tree work, plot clearances, the site Secretary normally contacts the Allotment Officer directly. The Area Representative should be contacted:
1. If a routine problem is not cleared up quickly
2. If you need advice about complex problems e.g. difficult tenants; disputes about buildings or cultivation levels
3. When your site needs an advocate or advice the Area Representative will visit your site and then bring the matter back to NAWG.
Please remember that our area reps don’t get paid, they’re volunteers |
The current chairman is Michael Armstrong, whose
plot is at Walkergate Hospital.
